Vatican City — Tanzania has reaffirmed its long-standing diplomatic and moral partnership with the Holy See, emphasizing shared commitments to peace, dialogue, human dignity, and social development.

The message was delivered by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo (MP), during an official audience with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on 29 October 2025. Minister Kombo conveyed warm greetings and a special message from President Samia Suluhu Hassan, underscoring Tanzania’s appreciation for the Catholic Church’s contribution to education, healthcare, social welfare, and national cohesion.

He praised the Church’s moral leadership and its role in promoting unity and peaceful coexistence in Tanzania, noting that its institutions continue to complement government efforts, particularly among vulnerable communities.

Tanzania also welcomed the Holy See’s proposal to establish a resident diplomatic mission at the Vatican, describing the move as an important step toward strengthening structured cooperation. Currently, Tanzania is represented by a non-resident ambassador based in Berlin.

During discussions, Minister Kombo briefed the Pope on Tanzania’s commitment to national reconciliation following post-election tensions, guided by President Samia’s 4R philosophy — Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms, and Rebuilding. He highlighted ongoing efforts, including inclusive dialogue and the establishment of an independent review process to promote accountability and prevent future unrest.

Pope Leo XIV welcomed Tanzania’s approach and expressed his readiness to continue praying for peace, unity, and stability in the country. He also recalled his pastoral experiences in Tanzania, saying they left a lasting impression and strengthened his personal connection to the nation.

In addition to the Papal audience, Minister Kombo held talks with senior Vatican officials, including Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, focusing on deepening diplomatic cooperation and collaboration in social development.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the engagement reflects Tanzania’s diplomatic direction of being “non-aligned but multi-engaged,” pursuing partnerships that advance national unity, peace, and shared prosperity.
