*Telecom operator recognised for technology that can help saves lives

At a ceremony at Dubai Internet City yesterday, Etisalat, the leading telecommunications operator in Middle East, Africa and Asia, was announced as the winner of the inaugural Drones World Cup among theGovernment Entities for its innovative use of technology thatenhances services to the community.

Launched last year, the ‘Drones for Good’ award invites innovative and creative minds to find solutions to improve people’s lives and provide positive technological solutions to modern day issues. Speaking at the launch of the award last year, HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai said: "We want to reach to people before they reach us. We want to save time, to shorten distances, to increase effectiveness and to make services easier."

Commenting on the award, Group CEO, Ahmad Julfar, said: “It is a great honor to be the first Government entity to receive this award. Technology is the dynamic which is shaping our world and we are committed to using it to benefit individuals and communities wherever we operate. Reducing emergency response times saves lives and, thanks to the strength of the technological capability that exists within the Etisalat, we can harness this dynamic to add value across all the communities we serve".

The development and implementation of innovative technical solutions is an integral part of our strategy. Not only are we committed to bringing the most advanced and sophisticated technologies to the countries where we operate, we also strive to rollout these technologies in smart and innovative ways to deliver operational excellence. Recently, we added wings to our technology ambitions, deploying multi-tasking drones as a smart enabler for the transformation of the ICT landscape.”

Etisalat drones caninstantly extend network coverage, which is critical in times of emergency. This technological capability can be used to save lives by linking up inaccessibly remote locations, such as off-shore oil rigs or ocean vessels. Special micro-base stations, installed on the drones themselves, provide on-the-spot coverage. Connected through Thuraya network, the drones extend GSM coverage and enable people to use their existing mobile phones in the most critical conditions. The drones can also deliver high-grade medical diagnostic tools to the emergency sites, enabling non- medically trained individuals to administer basic medical procedures and, under real-time supervision from the doctors connected wirelessly to the emergency site from the hospitals, remotely execute life-saving decisions in real-time.

Etisalat’s highly specialised drones enable the company to rollout new technologies support operations across our network, including the more complex and remote locations. Drones, equipped with special measurement tools, provide accurate information on the performance of each element of the network to Etisalat’s Network Operations Center. As a result, operational issues can be addressed effectively and efficiently, which in turn translates into exceptional end-user experience and the highest quality of service.

The first of its kind and scale, the“Drones for Good”award is dedicated to transforming these new technologies into practical solutions for improving people’s lives today. More than 800 participants from 57 countries entered the industry defining competition.
