Tanzania has reiterated its commitment to supporting all initiatives under the Universal Postal Union (UPU) aimed at leveraging a unified postal territory and enhancing global connectivity and cooperation.

This affirmation was made by the Deputy Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Engineer Maryprisca Mahundi, in an official speech delivered on her behalf by the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Nicholaus Merinyo Mkapa.

The speech was presented during the official opening of the UPU's Strategy Development Regional Round Table for Africa, held at the Pan-African Postal Union Headquarters- PAPU Tower in Arusha.

"I am very much aware that the presentations, panel discussions, and group sessions are designed to foster interactive and inclusive discussions on the proposed strategic framework, underlying goals, and their implications for the African region," stated the Deputy Minister in her written speech.

She outlined some of the key goals of the proposed UPU strategic framework, which include Innovations in the global postal ecosystem; driving transformation and growth; facilitating postal development through enhanced cooperation; and building resilience and inclusivity.
Engineer Mahundi commended the UPU's International Bureau (IB) for organizing this critical Regional Round Table, which focuses on developing the UPU's Postal Strategy for 2026–2029.

"The significance of hosting this event in Arusha marks an important step in our collaborative efforts to enhance the productivity of the postal sector," the Deputy Minister emphasized.

She highlighted that this initiative is part of a series of six regional strategy round tables held worldwide in 2024.
"This approach ensures that the UPU’s strategy is drafted with comprehensive, well-informed input from stakeholders, considering the aspired future of African posts."

The Deputy Minister noted that the forum aims to address the regional needs of the UPU’s key stakeholders, including Ministries, Designated Operators, and Regulatory agencies. She also acknowledged the efforts of the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU) Secretariat in championing a unified African postal territory.

Pan African Postal Union Secretary General, Dr. Sifundo Chief Moyo, remarked that the recently concluded PAPU Administrative Council meeting focused on the challenges and opportunities facing the Postal Sector in Africa, and how local corporations can address and benefit from them.
"We expect to see concrete actions from our operators on how they will innovate and introduce new products on digital platforms," said Dr. Moyo.

Dr. Moyo added that cross-border trade between African countries will become more prominent through digital transactions, enabling small and medium enterprises on the continent to benefit from international trading opportunities.

The UPU Deputy Secretary General, Mr. Osvald Marjani, stated that the strategy aims to ensure postal services are accessible and affordable to all, which can be achieved through a unified global postal territory.
