Ulric Charteris, Executive Creative Director at Roots255 in Dar es
Salaam, recently accepted the invitation to be the external Judge
chairing Zimbabwe’s Ngoma Awards. The Awards ceremony is Zimbabwe’s
grandest stage for recognising excellence in their advertising industry.
This
was the first time any individual working in the Tanzanian advertising
industry officiated at an advertising ceremony on the continent. “It was
an honour to participate in judging work from my peers in another
African country,” Charteris commented. Charteris enhanced the Ngoma
Awards committee with his deep experience in the advertising industry,
gained from being a creative director of South Africa’s largest
advertising agency, FCB, and regional creative director for Ogilvy
Africa. Charteris has a thorough understanding of African markets having
worked in countries like Tanzania, Ghana, Botswana, Uganda and
Mozambique. Despite Charteris’ vast international experience and
success, his trip to Zimbabwe was a fresh experience for him. “I’d never
actually been to Zimbabwe, so it was an opportunity I never would have
missed. I have always had a keen interest in the Zimbabwean advertising
scene, especially having seen the high standard of work by Zimbabwean
creatives in Tanzania and at our affiliate office in Botswana. I was
very impressed and inspired by the creative work at the Ngomas,”
concluded Charteris.

Charteris also held workshops with the top creatives and agency owners in Zimbabwe on how to improve the quality of Afro-centric work in their country and on the continent as a whole. “Zimbabwe has many of the same challenges as we do in Tanzania,” said Charteris. “But sharing our experiences and collaborating to find common solutions is a step forward to creating our own, African voice in communications.”
Internationally Charteris is has also garnered top industry awards, including Cannes Lions in France, Clios (for five years consecutively) and the One Show awards in the United States. Meanwhile in the South African market he has also won two Grand Prix and a host of Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in South Africa's top award ceremonies such as the Loeries.
With this glimpse into the Zimbabwe’s advertising, Charteris will be able to tick another box on the list of African advertising industries he has experienced. It can only help bring fresh insights into the other African markets he operates in, specifically his home country, Tanzania. Charteris has also been invited to return to the Ngomas as the external Judge in the future.
