Youth have been called upon to actively participate in environmental issues in order to address the impact of climate change.

This call was made by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Youth Development, Dr. Ladislaus Komba during the celebrations to mark International Youth Day at Karimjee grounds in Dar es Salaam.

Dr. Komba said that environment conservation was only possible if people utilized resources properly for the benefit of future generations.

He added that sustainable environment required a good agricultural system that is not destructive. He warned against water pollution and cutting down trees as some of the destructive human activities that are not environmental friendly.

In his message to commemorate the Day, the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon noted that if climate change was left unaddressed it could cause an unraveling of the progress that has been made towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals,

Mr. Ban Ki-moon acknowledged that young people were well placed to contribute to the fight against climate change and should therefore be given a chance to take an active part in the decision –making of local, national and global levels.
.
International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12 each year to recognize efforts of the world’s youth in taking a leading role in global issues. It also aims to promote ways to engage young people in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities.

The theme for this year’s observance of International Youth Day is “Youth and climate change: time for action”.
