Palestinian Foreign Minister Dr. Riyad al-Maliki said on Thursday that American intervention had stopped the Palestinian application for statehood from getting nine votes in the UN Security Council and that he would not pursue a vote on Friday.

Al-Maliki told the London-based newspaper Al-Hayat, “We were not surprised that different opinions existed in the Security Council about the Palestinian application, but we were surprised that American pressure denied us getting the nine votes.”

The UN Security Council is scheduled to have a meeting for the ambassadors to discuss the report of the legal committee, which studied the Palestinian application, on Thursday. Al-Maliki told al-Hayat, however, that a vote would not follow on Friday.

Al-Maliki said, “We were expecting to get the nine votes from the Security Council, but it’s clear that the American opposition will deny us from getting them, in case it comes to a vote.”

He said that one of the examples of American intervention was the visit of the American representative to Bosnia and Herzegovina one day after al-Maliki’s visit.

“We knew that our road to the UN is not a cakewalk, it’s a battle,” he said. “We will go round after round until we win.”

“Maybe we will come back to the Security Council in a few days or weeks,” he said.
