Five kilograms of narcotics also were found hidden in the residence where Mama Lela was located. Mama Lela was arrested in response to a German-issued INTERPOL notice requesting her arrest and extradition on standing drug-related charges in Germany. Mama Lela is suspected of having operated as a narcotics trafficker in East Africa for many years.
The White House publicly identified Mama Lela and six other individuals as significant foreign narcotics traffickers pursuant to the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act. The United States Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is charged with enforcing U.S. sanctions under this Act. The Act is an administrative law aimed at imposing sanctions to target the activities of foreign narcotics traffickers and their organizations worldwide. The objective is to deny the designated foreign narcotics traffickers, their businesses, and their agents access to the U.S. financial system and the benefits of trade and transactions involving U.S. persons.
We appreciate the Tanzanian government's efforts to combat narcotics trafficking and applaud recently successful operations. The actions against Mama Lela are an excellent example of multiple countries' efforts to disrupt and prevent the smuggling activities of the most significant traffickers in the world. The U.S. Government looks forward to continued cooperation and ongoing worldwide operations to counter drug trafficking.
