Pan-African sportscaster SuperSport has confirmed that it is today in a position to announce that it has secured, amongst others, the exclusive pay television rights to broadcast the much-anticipated 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, live across sub-Saharan Africa, excluding South Africa.

The news means that DStv audiences in over 40 countries across the continent will see all the goals, drama, action and excitement from the very first FIFA World Cup to ever be played in Africa . The biggest soccer tournament in the world has always drawn widespread attention from African fans but with the tournament making its African debut that attention is soaring.

Given the African interest in the event, SuperSport International CEO Imtiaz Patel was delighted when announcing the deal, saying that it was in keeping with SuperSport’s legacy of continually bringing viewers across the continent major international sports programming.

"To now be able to bring this prestigious event to Africa the first time it's happening on the continent, is indeed a special and proud moment. Viewers can look forward to quality coverage and we already have plans in place to compliment the live action with superb supplementary product."

“FIFA’s approach has always been to ensure that images of our events will be seen by the widest possible audience. We are therefore very pleased to be working with such an experienced partner as SuperSport in extending the frontiers of football coverage across 42 African countries supplementary to the provided free TV coverage in the region”, says FIFA Secretary General Jérome Valcke.

Running for a full month from June 11 to July 11, the 2010 FIFA World Cup will see 32 nations, including for the first time with the automatically qualified hosts South Africa 6 African teams, contesting 64 matches with one country earning the right to call itself world champions.

For MultiChoice Africa President Eben Greyling, the winners have already been crowned. “DStv soccer fans tuning into this incredible sporting festival will ultimately be the big winners. SuperSport creates several premier channels for our DStv service and we’re confident that with their world-class technical expertise they will fully showcase this historic African event. DStv remains at the forefront of screening major global sporting events and following our coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the next major event is the 2010 FIFA World Cup which our audiences can look forward to seeing on our service.”

First televised in 1954, the FIFA World Cup is arguably the most widely viewed and followed sporting event in the world. The cumulative audience of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, including all of the matches, is estimated to be 26.29 billion with 715.1 million individuals watching the final match of this tournament (a ninth of the entire population of the planet). Played every four years since 1930, with just two interruptions due to World War 2, the FIFA World Cup draws some of the brightest talents in the football world and provides a platform for some of the most entertaining and memorable soccer ever played.

Meanwhile SuperSport has also confirmed that it can today announce that it has secured the exclusive pay television rights for sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) to screen the upcoming 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup 2009.
