American Assistance Helps Bring Water Back to Muheza Villages

On behalf of the American people, a civil affairs team of the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) has repaired water wells in Ubembe, Kibanda and Bwembwera in Muheza district, Tanga Region. About 6,000 community members will benefit from the repaired wells all of which had become inactive three years ago. The total cost of the newly-repaired water wells is valued at approximately $8,000 (Tsh9.6 million).

The American-led team worked in partnership with, and with guidance from, the Muheza water engineers’ office, Tanga City water engineer’s office, and local villagers who hauled sand, gravel and cement to complete repairs on the well pumps. Manual pumps were installed at each of the three villages to make water retrieval easier and more efficient, protect the well from contamination by objects falling into an open hole, and the team lowered the incline of the Ubembe water pump to prevent the possibility of injuries to local villagers. The installed pumps meet the government’s new standards for use and long term reliability set forth by the Ministry of Water.

Other recent projects carried out on behalf of the American people by CJTF-HOA in Tanzania include the construction of a girl’s dormitory at a secondary school in Pawaga, Iringa Region, construction of a primary school and provision of desks and supplies in Matale village on Pemba Island, and other ongoing Civil Affairs projects in Tanga Region.

This assistance comes from the American people and is part of overall U.S. Government direct and multilateral assistance to Tanzania of more than 750 billion Tanzanian shillings this year.
