Ten African
green energy pioneers have been shortlisted today for the 2013
International Ashden Awards, moving a step closer to winning up to
£40,000 in prize money, as well as access to business support and
international media exposure.
The organisations are:
Azuri Technologies Selling pay-as-you-go solar products in Africa
Biomasse Mali: Selling charcoal and briquettes produced from agricultural waste
Cookswell Jikos Selling improved cookstoves, ovens and kilns in Africa
Dreamlight Solid Waste Management: Producing biogas and briquettes in Ethiopia
Impact Carbon Supporting stove distributers with carbon finance in Africa
Natural Balance Selling heat-retaining cooking bags in South Africa
Re:char Inc. Selling biochar kilns in Kenya
The Paradigm Project Selling improved cookstoves in Africa
SolarAid: Selling solar lanterns in East Africa
WWF-DRC Improving charcoal stoves in Africa
Some
14 companies and programmes have been shortlisted for the International
Ashden Awards. Finalists will be announced in May 2013, with Awards to
be presented at a prestigious ceremony in London on 20 June 2013.

vision of a low-carbon future for all we need to find champions who are
making a real difference in how we use and generate energy, and who can
inspire change. This is what we do with the Ashden Awards.”
The Ashden Awards judging panel includes Professor Paul Ekins, Professor of Energy and Environment Policy of the UCL Energy Institute at University College, London; Andrew Simms of the New Economics Foundation; Dominic Brain of Christian Aid and Michael Mason, international carbon finance expert.
