A United States energy trade mission led by Assistant Secretary of State for Africa Johnnie Carson met on February 9 with His Excellency Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, President of the United Republic of Tanzania to discuss the Tanzanian energy sector and possible opportunities for U.S. investment.   Assistant Secretary Carson and the delegation arrived in Dar es Salaam on February 8 as part of a four-country tour including Mozambique, Nigeria, and Ghana to look at potential investment projects with a focus on power generation.  The Corporate Council on Africa is co-sponsoring the mission.  The delegation's visit underscores the United States government's commitment to strengthening economic cooperation and trade with Tanzania, while highlighting the country's tremendous potential as well.   

Joining Assistant Secretary Carson in the delegation are representatives of Anadarko Petroleum, Caterpillar, Chevron, Energy International, General Electric, Pike Enterprises, Strategic Urban Development Alliance LLC, Symbion, and Zanbato Group.  U.S. Government members of the delegation including Wanda Felton, vice chair of the U.S. Export-Import Bank, and the leadership from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources.  

On February 9, the delegation participated in a roundtable and luncheon hosted by the Ministry of Energy which gathered Tanzanian private and public sector energy officials at the Serena Hotel.  The delegation is also expected to meet with Minister of Energy William Mganga Ngeleja, Minister of Finance Mustafa Mkulo, and TANESCO Managing Director William Mhando.  On February 10, the delegation will convene at the Tanzania Investment Center where they will engage with representatives from the Investment Center, Tanzanian Revenue Authority and Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority of Tanzania.  Later that day, they will participate in a business luncheon and roundtable with the American Chamber of Commerce, the Tanzania National Business Council, Confederation of Tanzanian Industries, Tanzania Private Sector Foundation, and National Development Corporation. 

In a reception at his residence on February 9, U.S. Ambassador Alfonso E. Lenhardt said, "Tanzania is a country blessed with natural resources and tremendous potential, particularly when it comes to energy.  Now is the time to attract foreign investors to partner with Tanzanians . . . American companies are interested in doing business in Africa."  "Private sector investment is the key to unlocking that potential and advancing Tanzania's economic growth" Ambassador Lenhardt added.
