Talented: Kyle Rees was a popular pupil

A schoolboy was arrested last night on suspicion of killing a fellow pupil with a cricket ball. Kyle Rees, 16, died yesterday after he was hit on the head by the ball on Monday afternoon in the school playground.

Shocked teachers had rushed to help the GCSE student after he was knocked unconscious. He died at a hospital’s neurological unit with his tearful family at his bedside.

Friends say the ball had been thrown at Kyle by one of his pals. Headteacher Debbie Godfrey-Phaure said: “Students and staff are devastated by this terrible tragedy. At an appropriate time we will celebrate his memory and life. Kyle was a memorable and talented young man.

“He was very popular with his peers and he was expected to do well in his GCSEs this summer.” The lad, who had recently been accepted for an engineering college course, lived in Bournemouth, Dorset, with his mum, Tanya Cooper, 42, two older brothers and a sister.

Police said: “A 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the incident, initially for assault and subsequently on suspicion of manslaughter. He’s been released on bail while enquiries continue.”

Officers have sealed off an area of the playground at Portchester School in Bournemouth while their investigation continues. A tribute site for Kyle has been set up on Facebook and flowers were left at the all-boys’ school.

The specialist sports college, which has 766 pupils, is next door to Avonbourne girls’ school. Kyle’s mum, who works part-time in the catering department at a language school, split from Martin Beale last year after 11 years. Mr Beale’s mum, Christine Shave, yesterday described the family’s heartbreak when they heard about Kyle’s injuries

Christine, 54, from Bournemouth, said: “My son phoned me last night and told me the terrible news. He was in floods of tears. “He was devastated – he is like a dad to Kyle.”

Year 11 pupil Kyle was first taken to hospital in Bournemouth then the neurological unit at Southampton General Hospital.
