Sweden’s Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Development Cooperation Division Maria van Berlekom, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator Alberic Kacou, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the release of SEK 35,000,000 ($US 5.15 million) to the One Fund, the pooled funding mechanism for Delivering As One in Tanzania.

The funds will be used towards the first year of programming under the 2011-2015 UN Development Assistance Plan (UNDAP). This contribution represents a significant increase over Sweden’s last support to UN Tanzania in 2008 which totalled SEK 9,000,000 ($US 1.33 million).

Following the closed-door signing ceremony, Kacou commented on the importance of the day’s events: “On behalf of the UN system in Tanzania I would like to thank the Government of Sweden for their generous contribution. By providing un-earmarked resources, Sweden is giving us the flexibility to support Government in the sectors that Tanzania prioritises. In addition, choosing to support the One Fund is the greatest show of support for our ongoing reform efforts which include having a more coordinated approach to collaboration with donors.”

The Government of Sweden will have its eye on results delivery across all ten of the UNDAP programmes sectors, but with a particular interest in the UN’s work on Gender, Human Rights and Governance. For her part, during the meeting Berlekom noted that “Sweden is firmly committed to the UN system. We are also strongly behind the One-UN reform, and have for many years actively advocated for change, increased efficiency and better results - from the UN HQ and individual UN agencies to country level work... We believe that the UNDAP is a key step towards further enhancing the UN system’s coherence and effectiveness at country level, thereby delivering clear results and more ‘value for money’.”

The UNDAP is a four-year $777 million country programme of cooperation for the UN in Tanzania. UNDAP programmes will contribute to all three pillars of MKUKUTA & MKUZA II, touching specifically upon: Economic Growth; Environment and Climate Change; Education, Health, HIV and AIDS, WASH; Social Protection; Governance; Refugees; Emergencies and Disaster Response.
