July 2008

The seventh IDOLS Spectacular saw the Top 4 tested by the show’s producers and vocal coach on the “Producer’s Choice” show. The team behind the scenes chose songs which they thought would most accurately showcase the talented quartet’s voices – and test them to see which of them could step up and stand out. And last night (13 July) on M-Net (DStv Channel 101/2) they nearly tore the roof off The Bomas in Nairobi !

The contestants answered questions posed by viewers on the website this week in their video inserts. Eric was asked about whether he’ll keep his Afro – he said everyone in his family apart from his Dad wears a ‘fro and promised to keep it! He kicked off the seventh Spectacular with Lionel Ritchie’s “All Night Long”. TK and Angela were both impressed with his performance, with Angela expressing her surprise at his dancing ability! Scar said he had a lot of fans and it was great that he never disappointed them.

Nicollette was asked if she though there should be a “Kids’ Idols”, based on her background in teaching music to young children. She said it would be a good idea as a moulding experience for them, but only if the judges didn’t grill them! Her first song of the evening was “Do You Know Where You’re Going To?” by Diana Ross. TK felt she did a good job with a challenging song and Angela welcomed her back to the stage. “That performance is the reason you’re here!” she said. Scar made her promise to take the fantastic opportunity she had been given on IDOLS and run with it.

Adiona’s website question was about whether she would ever join her parents, who live overseas, or if her heart belonged to Africa . “ Africa is my home, it’s where my heart is” she said. She wants to be with her folks, but only to visit! She tackled “The Greatest Reward” by Celine Dion as her first performance of the night. TK and Scar were impressed with her vocals, while Angela said it was a pleasure to watch her growth every week.

Trinah’s question was about whether she would continue to sing in the group she used to be a part of before she started her IDOLS journey, once the show was over. “I’ll tell you after the competition!” she said. I’ll always be a part of the group, whether I carry on singing with them or not.” Her first song was Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”. TK said her performance was “amazing” and that she would sell albums whether she was part of a group or singing solo. Angela was happy that she had managed to bring the emotion back to her singing, while Scar said that everyone watching was there to see a show – and that is exactly what she had delivered.

At the halfway mark, host Lebo Mzimbi asked the judges to earn their salaries by telling him who had impressed them so far. TK and Angela agreed that Trinah had impressed them the most, while Scar named Nicollette as his best performer so far.

Nicollette kicked off the second half of the show, answering a viewer question about choosing between making and album or going to school. “Both are very important to me,” she said. “It’s hard to choose but I’d like to finish school in one go then concentrate on the album. I’m not sure, it’sa tough one!” Her second performance was the Nat King Cole classic “Unforgettable”. TK said that he always thought she would sing a song like that really well, while Angela praised her stunning dress and said she would definitely be seeing her on stage at The Bomas again next week. Scar said he had four words for her – Believe Your Own Hype!

Adiona’s second question was about how she managed to pluck up the courage to dance with a member of the audience during her performance of “Lady Marmalade” last week. “Lady Marmalade is a character and I had to be the character!” she said. “Dancing with that guy is exactly what she would have done!” Her second song of the night was Rihanna’s smash hit “Umbrella”. TK and Scar both felt that her vocals were a little shaky, but that her performance was spot-on. Angela felt that this was going to be a tough week for voters. “I want to keep on watching you perform,” was her verdict.

Eric’s viewer question was about which of his fellow contestants have impressed him most. “Ammara is a great performer, she can dance and sing, Adiona has shown great versatility and Trinah has a strong voice,” he said. “Everybody has something different that shakes me. Nicollette has a flawless voice. I hope that answers your question!” His final song was “End of the Road” by BoyzIIMen. TK was impressed with his command of the stage and promised that if he managed to carry that past the end of IDOLS, he would be a successful artist for year to come. Angela told him he was already a winner and Scar praised him for always surpassing his expectations.

Trinah – the last performer of the evening - was asked who in the Top 10 she thought is or was the best singer. “Apart from me? Ammara and Eric - those guys are good!” she said. But I think it’s between me, Eric or Ammara!” She closed out the night with Mary Mary’s “Shackles”. TK said she tore the roof off, while Angela praised her fantastic performance on top of great vocals. Scar told her he’s constantly amazed by her vocal control. “It’s like you keep your voice in your pocket and you can pull it out whenever you want!” he said.

IDOLS mentor Kawesa Richard delivered his weekly verdict on the best and least impressive performances on the night. “The competition is getting hotter and hotter - the performance that massaged my stress away was Nicollette’s” he said. “Thank you to Africa for believing in her”. He felt that Adiona had had a weak night, but only because the song choice didn’t suit her particularly well.
