The second Idols Top 24 group performed on M-Net (DStv Channel 101 / 102) on Sunday May 11 – and showed that the world better watch out, because the next international singing sensation is definitely coming from Africa.
The judges – having handed the power of contestant choice over to the viewers – were again joined by contestant mentor Kawesa Richard.
Powerhouse performances by Penjani Ng’uni, Katungulu Mwendwa, Trinah Chisanga, Alice Chinyimba, Faycal Birikunzila and Irenne Njuguna showed the continent that this is going to be a seriously hot season of Idols!
24 year-old Tanzanian Penjani jump-started the night with an enormous song – Celine Dion’s It’s All Coming Back to Me. The judges seem to believe she has talent, but all three commented on the lack of clarity in her voice with Angela warning that although she had seamless high and low register, she needed to watch out for letting her warbling ‘runs’ ruin her performance.
Kenyan local Irenne tackled another Celine Dion hit, Declaration Of Love. TK thought she did pretty well, but both he and Scar expected more from her, with Scar proclaiming that he was waiting for the “WOW!” feeling, but didn’t get it. Angela was also a little disappointed, not doubting Irenne’s talent, but wishing she had done more with the song.
Zambian Trinah was up next with the Leo Sayer classic When I Need You – and the judges were united in their praise - TK liked the way she maintained her pitch and Angela called her “amazing!” Scar even seems to be a fan, sharing the fact that she gave him goose pimples!
Katungulu, the second Kenyan lady to take the stage, energetically belted out Gloria Estefan’s Rhythm of the Night. TK liked her dancing, but thought that her vocals weren’t particularly smooth. Angela thought she chose a fun song, but that it didn’t showcase her voice properly. Scar was lukewarm, though, as he felt he couldn’t hear a lot of what she was singing.
Alice, who originally auditioned in her hometown of Lusaka, Zambia, tackled The Corrs’ Dreams. TK thought it was an interesting song choice, while Angela praised her energy despite feeling that she was “thinking too much”. Scar again felt that he couldn’t hear her particularly clearly – and that she didn’t convey the song’s main themes.
One of the few remaining boys in a competition which the girls are rapidly taking over – 25 year-old Ugandan Faycal – closed out the night with Queen’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
The judges all thought he would manage to charm ladies across the continent – particularly because he looked like he was enjoying the song. Angela felt it wasn’t his best performance, but that his charisma would help convince the voters.
Mentor Kawesa Richard offered his thoughts on the evening as the contestants were assembled on stage for the final time, proclaiming Trinah as his favourite on the night. Penjani and Katungulu were the performers with the most potential, but he didn’t feel any connection with Irenne.
With audience voting deciding who will make it through to the TOP TEN from Group Two, all eyes are now focussed on Group 3 whose performances will be screened on M-Net and/or AfricaMagic on Sunday May 18. So make a date and tune in! IDOLS is sponsored by Celtel and produced by WaterFront Television.
