The judges at work.
Deborah Chansa.
Samantha Tirivacho.
The fourth and final IDOLS Top 24 group performed on M-Net on Africa Day (Sunday 25 May), and certainly gave DStv viewers across the continent something to celebrate!
This talented group, which comprised of Mkhululi Bhebhe, Deborah Chansa, Christine Apondiadda, Samantha Tirivacho, Ruvimbo Mukorombindo and Alice Kalufyanya, took to the stage in style as they belted out some of music’s most iconic pop tunes.
18-year-old Zambian Alice jump-started the night with the definitive ABBA hit Waterloo, having also originally auditioned with an ABBA song in Lusaka. Commenting on her performance, TK said he liked the dancing, but shared Angela’s opinion that overall Alice’s performance was a bit flat. All three judges crave the perfect combination of performance and vocal ability, but didn’t feel that Alice delivered.
Next up was Zimbabwean student Ruvimbo who tackled Cher’s rocking Walking in Memphis. TK felt he couldn’t hear what she was saying, while Angela felt that Ruvimbo chose a great song to showcase her voice. Scar said that although the audience seemed to like her, Ruvimbo needed to try songs which took her out of her comfort zone and really showcased what she is capable of.
Another Zimbabwean – 23 year-old Administrative Assistant Mkhululi – sang the glorious love theme Sway by Michael Buble. Angela and Scar both felt he held back a bit, although Angela proclaimed his performance the best of the night so far.
Zambian fashion designer Deborah – who made her own dress for the evening – upped the ante with Leanne Rimes’ soul seaching How Do I Live Without You? TK felt she started out well, but got pitchy – though he did see potential in her. Angela said Deborah gets better with every performance and that she was bound to be a star. Once Scar had finished admiring Deborah’s dress, he simply wished her luck!
Determined to prove her vocal power, Kenya’s Christine followed Deborah onstage and took on a huge soundtrack hit – Aerosmith’s I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing, from Bruce Willis blockbuster Armageddon.
After an extended ovation from the crowd, the judges also shared their admiration for the talented 23 year-old. TK warned that despite her obvious talent, she had nearly lost the tune a few times – something to watch out for. Angela and Scar also warned about being carried away by the crowd, with Angela declaring that Christine reminded her of Celine Dion!
20-year-old HR assistant Samantha, from Zimbabwe, closed out the final Top 24 show with Tina Turner’s Simply The Best. TK liked her energy, but was left feeling that he hadn’t seen the ‘real’ Samantha in her performance. Angela said that if she had closed her eyes, she would have sworn that Tina Turner was back on stage, while Scar declared that Africa would be missing out if they didn’t vote this talented performer through to the Top 10.
With two contestants from Group Four destined to be voted by the public onto the IDOLS Top 10 stage, and two contestants set to be selected as wildcards by the judges, all eyes are now set on the glittering first IDOLS Top 10 Spectacular of this series!
So tune in and see the TOP 10 perform together for the very first time, on Sunday June 1 on M-Net and/or AfricaMagic.
