In order to further our friendship with our Tanzanian people, to let Chinese people who have to work in Tanzania during the festival merriness, and to offer a chance for Tanzanian people to share the festival happiness, with the kind help of the Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports of Tanzania, we are going to hold on 15th January 2012 Chinese New Year celebration, the third “Focus on Africa, Chinese New Year in Tanzania” Celebration.

This year’s celebration comprises 2 major activities as follows:

On Jan 15th, at North Mnazi Mmoja Ground from 14:00-18:00, Temple Fair is to be held, where the folk artists from China are going to show the arts of Chinese paper-cutting and clay figurine together with performance of dragon & lion dancing and Chinese Kungfu. And from 18:00 to 20:00, at North Mnazi Mmoja Ground, there is the entertainment show and fireworks set off, where artists from Tianjin arts Troupe from China and Tanzania JAT artists are going to perform for the celebration of the Chinese New Year.

Aside from above-mentioned programs, there are a lot of custom to go with the Chinese New Year. Strictly speaking, the Chinese New Year starts every year in the early days of the 12th lunar month and will last till the mid of the 1st lunar month of the next year (for instance, this year. The eve is on Jan 22nd)., of them, the most important days are the eve of the Chinese New Year and the following three days, which starts from Jan 23rd up to 25th of 2012.

The Chinese government now stipulates that people have three days of for the Chinese New Year.

The 23rd day of the 12th lunar month is called the Preliminary Eve, people begin preparing for the coming New Year. This is called “seeing the New Year in”. Store owners remain busy as everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the New Year.

Materials not only include edible oil, rice, flour, chicken, duck, fish and meat but also fruit, candles and different kinds of nuts. What’s more, various decorations, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives, are all in shopping lists of people.

Fireworks were once a common custom during the Chinese New Year. People thought the splattering sound could help drive away evil spirit. A series of activities such as dragon lantern dancing, lantern festivals and temple fair will be held for several days. The Chinese New Year then comes to an end when the lantern festival is finished.

Temple fair becomes part of residents’ life during Chinese New Year in China. For foreigners, temple fair is definitely a culture experience, because it shows Chinese culture form a very detailed perspective. While enjoying the dumplings of Chinese delicacies, you can appreciate craftsmanship and artwork displayed by local artisans.

More than 30,000 years ago. Chinese ancestors invented the 10 heavenly stems and 12 earthly branches in order to make things easier to memorize and the animals in order are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. The past 2011 is the year of rabbit, so 2012 is the year of dragon. Dragon is a special symbol of Chinese culture with much ancient legend. It represents power, dignity, honor, luck and success. As a result you could find out the logo of this Chinese New Year event is a Chinese dragon.

The president of Tanzania will extend Chinese New Year greetings to the Chinese people around the world. Some donations are to be made by Chinese businesses during the celebration. We have also invited some Tanzanian government Officials and some Ambassadors and Diplomats accredited to Tanzania to the event.

In the end, we wish everyone a happy New Year, happy Dragon’s Year and wish China-Tanzania friendship remain ever-green. Wishing Tanzania flourishes and people live in peace.
