Women Empowerment Project in Zanzibar (WEZA) will on Thursday (24/11, 2011) organize a day long fair at Bwawani Hotel bringing together 350 stakeholders including women entrepreneurs who are beneficiaries of the project.
WEZA Manager, Rose Matovu said the fair will avail the rural women an opportunity to showcase their economic products and advocacy strategies they use to promote human rights and gender justice to the society.
She said Zanzibar is a home of numerous women entrepreneurs making quality products but they have not been promoted recognized and supported by stakeholders at their broad dimension.
According to Matovu WEZA women in Zanzibar engage in economic projects such as making spice soaps, liquid soaps, baskets (vikapu) jam and pickles. They also produce vegetables such as spinach, onions and green pepper, a list of products.
She said the fair is aimed at informing stakeholders including potential customers as well as policy makers, development agencies and government officials on the contribution of women in economic and social aspect and the importance of supporting them.
She said women were also constantly engaged in solving various social problems including Gender Based Violence (GBV) and contributed to the provision of social services endeavor which needs to be supported by every development oriented human being.
WEZA project is currently has 7842 members from Unguja South and Pemba North majority of them being the rural women who would hardly be able to save 200 shilling per week at the beginning of the project in 2008.
However through WEZA the 7842 marginalized women and men have been empowered to manage economic projects effectively and today have savings worth more than 543 million shillings.
