RECIPIENTS OF 2008 MTV STAYING ALIVE FOUNDATION AWARDS
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 17 June 2008:

R&B singer-songwriter and MTV Staying Alive Special Ambassador, Kelly Rowland, and Georgia Arnold, Senior Vice President, Social Responsibility, MTV Networks International and Executive Director, Staying Alive Foundation, today announced the Tanzanian recipients of the 2008 Staying Alive Foundation Awards.
Rowland, a multi-platinum selling artist and founder member of the greatest female group of all time in the history of music, Destiny’s Child, revealed the 2008 grantees at a press conference at the Kilimanjaro Hotel Kempinski, Dar es Salaam during her trip this week to visit Tanzanian projects and grantees funded by the MTV Staying Alive Foundation. The global charity’s mission is to encourage and enable/support young people who are involved in HIV and AIDS awareness, education and prevention campaigns.
Staying Alive Foundation Awards are presented to individuals or groups who are relentless in their mission to encourage, educate and empower their peers in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Each Staying Alive Grant recipient receives a cash grant from the Staying Alive Foundation to enable them to realise a project associated with raising the awareness about HIV/AIDS. The Tanzanian recipients of the 2008 Staying Alive Foundation Awards are:
· ELIZABETH YOUTH GROUP – First time grantees Elizabeth Youth Group is a project led by Eliza, a young HIV+ Tanzanian woman. Eliza, an ex-sex worker, now dedicates her life to working with high-risk youth such as sex workers and drug users, educating and empowering them with information about HIV/AIDS. Over the next 12 months, the project will educate 100 young people to become peer educators, hold two workshops on HIV, organise screenings of the documentary on Eliza’s life and organise two drama presentations, a concert and a music show to mark World AIDS Day.
· TAYOPA – Kelly will also be meeting with TAYOPA, who received their Staying Alive Foundation grant in December 2007. TAYOPA is an organisation set up in Dar es Salaam by HIV+ youth who use drama, music and storytelling to inform young people about HIV.
Kelly Rowland praised the commitment and dedication of the 2008 Grant recipients, and also took the opportunity to make an impassioned plea for Tanzanian youth to recognize the importance of HIV testing in limiting the spread of new infections.
Commented Rowland, ‘All the 2008 Staying Alive grantees should be proud of the vital function they fulfill in their communities by helping to raise the awareness about HIV/AIDS. By stressing the importance of prevention, raising awareness about the basic issues surrounding HIV and AIDS and reducing stigma associated with infection they are taking direct action to help stop the spread of the disease.’
‘If more young people would take the simple step of getting tested for HIV as soon as it appears that they are at risk, then it would help to reduce the spread of HIV infection,’ added Rowland. ‘HIV tests in Tanzania are free and take just a few minutes. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to HIV infection, and it is important for everyone to know their HIV status. The quicker you know your status, the sooner you can receive treatment if you’re HIV+, and reduce the risk of inadvertently infecting future partners.’
Commented Georgia Arnold, ‘We are delighted that Kelly Rowland has been able to join us in Tanzania to witness and highlight the courageous and important work of groups like TAYOPA and the Elizabeth Youth Group. It is thanks to innovative grassroots projects such as these - and the impressive young people involved in them - that we can help turn the tide against the spread of HIV and AIDS.’
During her trip to East Africa, Kelly Rowland and the MTV Staying Alive Foundation have visited a number of projects run by Staying Alive Foundation grantees. Stops on the tour have included an eye opening visit to Hyena Square, Dar es Salaam with the founder of the Elizabeth Youth Group, and an uplifting trip to TAYOPA to witness one of their street theatre presentations.
Ms Rowland was appointed as the public face of Staying Alive in April 2008, promising to dedicate herself to raising the profile of the global charitable foundation, whose mission is to empower young people who are protecting themselves and their communities against HIV and AIDS.
Details of Kelly Rowland’s trip to Tanzania will be included in Kelly Rowland – Diary, airing on MTV channels around the world on World Aids Day (1 December 2008). Excerpts from her visit to East Africa including her trip to visit Hyena Square in Dar es Salaam, and her experiences at a HIV testing centre in Nairobi, will also be available online on a special microsite, www.kellyrowlandafrica.com, from 23 June 2008.

THE ELEPHANT AND THE ANT

It would seem there's no topic worthy of addressing that would not bore our patient readers, after the Round Table program of June 12, which dealt with the new edition of a book published in Bolivia 15 years ago, featuring now a prologue I wrote. During this program, an introduction was also read written at a later date by Evo Morales and a message from the prestigious Argentinean writer Stella Calloni, to be included in an upcoming edition. I had carefully chosen the information I used for that prologue.
A powerful internationalist spirit, which had its roots in the broad contingent of Cuban combatants who participated in the anti-fascist struggle of the Spanish people and made the best traditions of the world worker's movement its own, had developed in Cuba in the first years of the Revolution.
We are not in the habit of publicizing our cooperative efforts with other peoples, but it is at times impossible to prevent the press from mentioning it. Our cooperative efforts stem from profound feelings that have nothing to do with a desire for publicity.
Some ask themselves how it is possible for a small country with scarce resources to carry out tasks of such magnitude in fields as decisive as education and health, without which contemporary society is unthinkable.
Humanity developed the goods and services essential to its existence since establishing its first society, and the latter has in turn developed from the most elementary to the most sophisticated of forms over many thousands of years.
The exploitation of man by man was inseparable from this development, as we all know or ought to know.
The different ways in which this reality has been perceived have always depended on the place each of us occupies within society. For long, exploitation was seen as something natural and the immense majority was never aware of the above relation.
At the very height of capitalist development in England, which was a world leader, next to the United States and other countries in Europe, in a world that was already dominated by colonialism and expansionism, a great thinker and history and economics scholar, Karl Marx, on the basis of the ideas of the most prestigious German philosophers and economists of the time –including Hegel, Adam Smith and David Ricardo, with whom he disagreed– elaborated, wrote and published his ideas on capitalism’s relations of production and exchange in 1859 in a work titled Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy. In 1867, he continued to spread his ideas with the publication of the first volume of his most important work, a work that made him famous: The Capital. Most of the long book, on the basis of Marx’s notes and comments, was edited by Engels, who shared Marx’s ideas and, like a prophet, spread his work after Marx’s death in 1883.
What Marx published constitutes the most serious analysis ever to be written about class society and the exploitation of man by man. Marxism had thus been born, as the foundation of revolutionary parties and movements that proclaimed socialism as their objective, including nearly all social-democratic parties that, when World War I broke out, betrayed the slogan proclaimed by Marx and Engels in The Communist Manifesto, first published in 1848: "Workers of the world, unite!”
One of the truths that this great thinker expressed in simple terms was that: “In the social production during their lives, men establish certain necessary relations independent of their wills, relations of production which correspond to a given phase of development of their material productive forces. It is not man’s consciousness which determines its being, but on the contrary, it is its social being which determines its consciousness. On reaching a given phase of development, society's material productive forces come into contradiction with existing production relations...From forms of development of the productive forces, these relations become obstacles to the latter and an era of social revolution thus begins...No social formation disappears before its productive forces are fully developed and no new and more advanced production relations emerge before the material conditions for their existence have matured within the old society".
I could not find better words to more clearly and precisely express these concepts elaborated by Marx, concepts whose essence, with a basic explanation from a teacher, even one of the young Cubans who joined the Young Communists League this past Saturday June 14th could understand.
To describe the concrete development of the class struggle, Marx wrote The Class Struggle in France from 1848 to 1850 and the 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte, two excellent historical analyses that delight any reader. He was a true genius.
Lenin, a profound continuator of dialectical thought and Marx’s research, wrote two key works: The State and Revolution and Imperialism: the Highest Stage of Capitalism. Marx’s ideas, put into practice by Lenin through the October Revolution, were also developed by Mao Zedong and other Third World revolutionary leaders. Without them, the Cuban Revolution would not have taken place in the United States’ backyard.
Had Marxist thought simply limited itself to the idea that "no social formation disappears before its productive forces are fully developed", the capitalist theoretician Francis Fukuyama would have been right in proclaiming that the collapse of the Soviet Union marked the end of history and ideologies and that all resistance to the capitalist system of production should cease.
When the founder of scientific socialism published his ideas, society’s productive forces were far from fully developed. Technology had not yet yielded deadly weapons of mass destruction capable of exterminating the human species; the aerospatial domain did not yet exist, nor did the unlimited squandering of hydrocarbons and non-renewable fossil fuels; climate change had not yet been detected in a natural world whose potential seemed infinite to humanity, nor had the world food crisis, to be borne by innumerable combustion engines and a population six times larger than that which inhabited the planet on the year Marx was born (then of one billion), made itself known yet.
Cuba's socialist experience takes place at a time when imperial domination has expanded across the globe.
When I speak of consciousness I am not referring to a will capable of changing reality but, on the contrary, to knowledge of objective reality which can determine the path to follow.
Tens of million of people died in the war sparked off in the mid 20th century by fascism, an ideology which was new at the time, born in the anti-Marxist bosom of the developed capitalist world Lenin had foretold.
In Cuba, as in other Third World countries, the struggle for national liberation, under the leadership of the middle classes and petite bourgeoisie, and the struggle for socialism that the most advanced sectors of the working class and farmers had been waging over the years, combined and strengthened one another. Ideological and class contradictions also flourished. Objective and subjective factors varied considerably from one process to another.
The United Nations and other international organizations, where many saw the beginning of a new, international consciousness, emerged from the last world war. Those hopes were betrayed.
Fascism, whose instrument Hitler called the National Socialist Party, was re-born, more powerful and threatening than ever.
The empire deploys and keeps aircraft carriers in all of the world's seas, ever ready for military intervention. What does it decide to do in order to compete with Cuba in our hemisphere? To deploy an enormous ship turned into a floating hospital that works ten days in each country. It can assist a number of people daily but it cannot solve a country's problems. It does not compensate for the brain-drain, and it cannot train the specialists who are needed so that real medical services may be offered on any day of the week and year. All of the world's aircraft carriers, which today are instruments of military intervention deployed across the world's oceans, working as hospitals, could not offer those services to the millions of people treated by Cuban doctors in remote corners of the planet, where women go into labor, children are born and there are sick people in urgent need of attention.
Our country has demonstrated that it can stand up to all pressures and help other peoples.
I was thinking about our cooperative efforts, not only in Bolivia, but in Haiti, the Caribbean, several countries in Central America, South America, Africa and even distant Oceania, 20 thousand kilometers away. I also recalled the missions undertaken by the Henry Reeve Brigade, which responded to serious emergencies, traveling in our planes, transporting personnel and other resources.
We are not far from reaching the figure of one million people annually operated on for sight problems, free of charge. Can the United States really compete with Cuba?
We will make use of computers, not to create weapons of mass destruction and exterminate people but to convey knowledge to other peoples. From the economic point of view, the development of the intelligence and conscience of our fellow citizens, made possible by the Revolution, allow us not only to aid those in most need at no cost to us, but also to export specialized services, including healthcare services, to countries that have more resources than our own. In this field, the United States will never be able to compete with Cuba.

Our small country shall continue to hold its ground.
In one phrase: The ant has proved mightier than the elephant!

Top 9 Stand and Deliver!

The second IDOLS Spectacular gave the Top 9 contestants a chance to shine in front of the continent – and they delivered! The Bomas in Nairobi rocked to the tune of “Songs from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s” in a show screened on M-Net (DStv Channel 101/2) on Sunday June 8.
Host Lebo Mzimbi got the party started with Ammara, who sang the Ike & Tina Turner hit River Deep, Mountain High. TK and Angela agreed that while she has tremendous delivery, her song choices were starting to get monotonous. Scar concurred, declaring “You’re the real deal, but it wouldn’t hurt to test yourself.”
Uganda’s Faycal tackled Love The One You’re With by Stephen Stills next. TK “kinda liked it”, while Angela told him he was a great entertainer – despite not having the strongest voice in the competition this year. Scar told him to keep it simple – “I think there’s more to come from you. Just sing!”

Cynthia was up next, with the Marvin Gaye / Diana Ross tune, You are Everything. TK and Angela agreed that she looked stunning, but that her voice wasn’t matching up to her presence. While Angela felt that she had improved on last week’s performance, Scar told Africa he was wondering what she was still doing in the competition.
Zimbabwe’s Eric tried on the Gladys Knight & The Pips classic Heard It Through The Grapevine next – and showed that the boys may just take over the show! TK said he was a great performer, while Angela wanted him to challenge himself more. Scar positively gushed with praise. “There are two types of singers,” he said. “The first type makes a little money from singing at weddings and pubs. The second type sells CD’s and goes on tour. You’re the second type.”
Trinah put in a stellar performance of Cat Stevens’ The First Cut Is The Deepest. TK took his hat off to her, pointing out her versatility as an example to the other contestants. Angela was in raptures – “Girl you took me to another place and time – you took my heart out. If you carry on like this you’re going to win this competition!” Scar wasn’t convinced though, telling her that she had left her spark behind at last week’s show and issued a warning – “If you don’t watch out, the other contestants are going to walk all over you.”
Ugandan Nicollette was up next, with Roberta Flack’s Killing Me Softly. TK wished she had kept the song simple, while Angela berated her for ‘messing up’ the classic tune, also covered by The Fugees. Scar said that her nerves were better this week, but her singing still had a long way to go.
Adiona’s rendition of Chaka Khan’s I’m Every Woman had the judges pleased with her performance. TK thought it sounded great, while Angela cautioned her about her microphone technique. Scar was impressed, telling her that her growth as an entertainer made him happy to be a part of IDOLS.
Mkhululi was the penultimate performer to take the stage, singing Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. TK was happy to see him gaining confidence, while Angela reckoned he was the most improved performer on the night. Scar – after congratulating him for finding something to do with his previously-stationary left arm - said it was ok, but not great.
Zimbabwe’s Samantha ended off her insert by promising to rock viewers’ worlds with her version of Marvin Gaye’s Ain’t No Mountain High Enough. Would she convince the judges? TK felt as though the song was too big for her, and that she lost steam as she progressed through it. Angela thought she looked sexy, but she struggled because she moved around so much on stage. Scar – as usual – wasn’t particularly impressed, feeling that she was a singer, rather than an Idol.
With Christine out of the competition and another contestant heading out of the series this week after the results of the public vote are announced, audiences should tune in next week for the third IDOLS Spectacular. Remember that after the show is screened on M-Net on Sunday June 15, Africa has the power to choose who stays in the competition and it’s up to the continent to vote for their favourite.
You can vote via SMS, by calling your contestant’s number (which appears on screen during the show), or online at www.mnetafrica.com/idols. Results are verified by Alexander Forbes. Voting lines close at 10:00 (CAT) on Monday June 16, and the results show will be broadcast on M-Net (DStv Channel 101/2) on Monday night.
IDOLS is headline sponsored by Celtel and produced by WaterFront Television.

DStv audiences are invited to Mozambique , Uganda , Namibia and South Africa this week as M-Net's STUDIO 53 makes stopovers at these destinations during the latest episode of the lifestyle program!

First stop is Mozambique where STUDIO 53’s Katia visits the Lakshi Holistic Centre, a centre that incorporates different practices from yoga, reiki and tarot reading. DStv audiences can join Katia as she goes through all these practices and learns something new about herself. Next STUDIO 53 heads to Uganda to chat to Jonas Byarybanga. Jonas discovered dance when he was 12 years old and quickly became the star performer of Buddo Junior School ’s dance club. He continued to steal the limelight, at 17 years old he caught the eye of Alliance Françoise Director Didier Martina and began his destiny to dance on the world’s stage. Passionate to share his love of dance Jonas established the Keiga Dance Company. While he has performed across the continent and around the world, he makes sure he’s in Uganda for Kampala ’s Dance Week. Gaetano was present to see a performance that was filled with passion and honesty.

Also in the program, STUDIO 53’s Sitandwa experiences the beauty of Namibia ’s harbour town of Swakopmund , which is affectionately nicknamed “Sleeping Beauty”, as the pretty town is often covered in blankets of mist. It’s the perfect place for visitors who want to explore both Namibia ’s desserts and her coastline, but there’s plenty to discover in the town itself. Swakopmund is a charming combination of Greek mythology, German architecture and African sunshine

Lastly STUDIO 53’s Rosie attends the opening night of The Lion and The Jewel in Johannesburg . Set in a small Nigerian village the story explores the value of traditional Yoruba ways versus European innovations. It’s a comedy with dark undertones, as the characters search for their destiny and question their dreams. The old struggles against the new, tradition fights innovation, and the past challenges the present

DStv audiences in East and West Africa can watch STUDIO 53 on M-NET on Thursday June 5 19:30 CAT and on M-Net Series on Saturday June 7 18:00 CAT.

“Dear naomba leo ukija uniletee choculate baadaye si utanipeleka steers?

Labda nikupe tu mbinu kadhaa zinazoweza kukusaidia wewe mwanaume ambaye mpenzi wako amezidi kukuchuna.

Wakati mwingine mwambie SINAWapo wanaume ambao hawajui kukataa kila wanachoombwa wanatoa, eti wanaona aibu kusema SINA!
